Velodyne Acoustics is the leader in manufacturing subwoofers utilizing the servo-feedback principle. This servo-feedback system is one of the unique aspects of Velodyne subwoofer manufacturing. The Velodyne F-1500 subwoofer is the largest subwoofer of Velodyne's front-firing F-Series powered subwoofers. The F-Series features a variable low pass crossover filter in conjunction with a built-in amplifier. Velodyne is generally considered the standard in subwoofer design by which to compare most other subwoofers. Extended LFE Response Ranging from 15 to 20 Hz, which is the frequency range for movie and other sonic effects, many subwoofers start to rattle, producing an irritating noise. Velodyne subwoofers don't. The seamless response of the F-1500 operates smoothly below 18 Hz, the point where one can begin to sense the sound waves being produced. This ability is one of the hallmarks of a superior subwoofer for low frequency effects. High Efficiency Sound pressure level (SPL) is the ability to produce a measurable output at 1 watt of power. The Velodyne F-1500's 250-watt in-line amplifier and servo-controlled design assure 88-89 db efficiency. This is despite the inherent efficiency loss of a sealed box design generally. HGS System Velodyne is noteworthy for providing low distortion loudspeaker systems that impress everyone from professional sound engineers to casual listeners. Velodyne's patented High Gain Servo (HGS) system is the foundation for bringing nonlinear distortion down to unprecedented levels. The F-1500 uses the HGS technology to eliminate the distortions that plague other speakers, and accurately reproduce the sounds and low-end effects that bring music and movies to life. Subwoofer Controls The F-1500 subwoofer has a rear control panel that includes the power switch, a level control and a crossover adjustment. The included remote control, powered by two AAA batteries, mirrors these controls. Remote control has buttons for volume, mute and power on/off. The subwoofer level control is used to adjust the volume level of bass information in relation to the midrange and treble levels of the sound system. Physical Size The Velodyne F-1500 is a 20-inch cube with a 15-inch loudspeaker driver featuring a 96-oz. magnet. Together with the built-in amplifier, this makes the F-1500 a heavyweight subwoofer, weighing 79 lbs. The mere heft of the subwoofer, however, is part of the reason behind its notable low end performance.
